The conference “Young Women's Day - New Perspectives in Young Women’s Gynecology” organized under the auspices of the Rector of MUW was attended by more than 120 participants interested in pediatric and young women’s gynecology - obstetricians-gynecologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, pediatric surgeons, family physicians, residents of various specialties, midwives, nurses and students.
- The conference was practical in nature. We highlighted the legal aspects and principles of medical management in the most common problems reported by our young patients, we also discussed the latest recommendations - summed up the event Prof. Piotr Węgrzyn, Chairman of the Conference's Scientific Committee, Head of the Department of Obstetrics, Perinatology, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences MUW.
Young woman in a gynecologist's office
- The issue of the girl and gynecological advice still raises many emotions. We are still wondering how to deal with such a patient, and of course we have to rely both on recommendations and legal documents - Professor Ewa Wender-Ożegowska, National Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology, stressed at the conference.
Under current law, a legal guardian must be present during the gynecological visit of a female patient under the age of 18. For minors under 16 years of age, this is an absolute necessity, while for minors from 16 to 18 years of age, there is a concurrent consent - both of the patient and the guardian.
- If the fact of initiation of sexual intercourse is found during the examination, it cannot be concealed from the legal guardian, the national consultant reminded. - To prescribe contraceptives to a person under 16 years of age, the consent of the legal guardian is required. In the case of a female patient between the ages of 16 and 18, there must be a concurrent consent, so the consent of the legal representative is still necessary.
Fertility protection in girls with oncology diseases
One of the topics covered that attracted the most interest was safeguarding the fertility of girls during cancer treatment.
- The problem of oncofertility has admittedly been included in the government's in-vitro program, introduced in 2024, but unfortunately the procedure for harvesting and freezing ovarian tissue in girls with cancer has been omitted from the program - stressed Prof. Piotr Węgrzyn - There is an extremely large amount of work to be done in this area, and we need to join forces of all concerned to remind decision-makers that securing the fertility of oncologically ill girls, including those before puberty, should be a priority. When saving their lives, we need to think about saving their health in the broadest possible context - including reproductive health. Everything must be done so that a girl who overcomes cancer can become a mother in the future.
As many as 20 lectures were delivered at the conference. Invited guests also discussed problems related to puberty, painful menstruation, endometriosis, primary amenorrhea, adolescent bleeding, HPV vaccination. The topics discussed also included: treatment of lesions located in the vagina and vulva in girls, contraception, principles of ultrasound in girls' gynecology, management of adnexal lesions and genital malformations in girls, as well as pregnancy in adolescents.
