During the last week of September, the Didactic Center is crowded and bustling. This is when adaptation days for first-year students take place, organized by faculty student governments with the support of the Student Government MUW. This is a very important part of the introduction to academic life. Especially since the university is really a sizable organization and you need to become familiar with it.
- In the coming week you will meet new challenges, new subjects and a new way of learning. There will be some stress, some excitement, but rest assured, the beginnings are always the hardest - Piotr Maliborski, a student of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and vice-chairman of the faculty council, said to his new colleagues at the adaptation day of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - After that, it only gets better.
- I know that you have chosen a professional path that is not easy, that it will be full of inevitable bumps, but that it also brings great satisfaction once you have completed this path - said Prof. Paweł Włodarski, Vice Rector for International Relations, Development and Promotion for the 2020-2024 term, at one of the days.
Tips (not only) for the first year of study
What is the organization of the academic year, what documents each student must know, who to deal with issues related to the course of study, who can help when there is a problem, for example, with passing a subject ... These and many other questions were answered by the organizers and guests of the adaptation days. This is very useful knowledge, and the lack of it - can result in unpleasant consequences. For example, related to failure to pass the first year.
- The status of your year is unique under the document - the MUW study regulations, and your attendance at the university is absolutely dictated by the provisions of the regulations - stressed Łukasz Koperski, MD, PhD, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for the first and second year students, warning that passing histology or anatomy will not help in passing the year if there is no attendance at physical education, optional subjects or internships are not completed.
Is there anything in particular that can help you get through your first year and subsequent years of study? Prof. Mariusz Gujski, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, encouraged the students of his faculty to be systematic.
- This moment in which you find yourselves today, that is, the moment of jumping from earlier education to higher education, is a transition to a completely different system of education - the Dean emphasized - Much more will depend on you now, in terms of responsibility and making sure that you work diligently every day. If you do not take to systematic work from the very beginning, and here you do not have a tutor or teacher, you will wake up in the first or second session, months will be for nothing. Only a lack of systematicity can lead to such a disaster.
A gdy pojawi się problem? Dr hab. Agnieszka Bazylko, prodziekanka Wydziału Farmaceutycznego ds. kształcenia na kierunku farmacja radziła, aby nie czekać, aż „mleko się wyleje”.
- Come to us, as representatives of academic teachers, with problems earlier, not at the very end, when nothing can really be done anymore.
Because the representatives of the university are willing to provide support and assistance and relate with kindness to every student.
- We always act in a straightforward manner - Prof. Dorota Olczak-Kowalczyk, the former dean of the faculty, said to the participants of the adaptation day of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. - We try to do everything possible to help you in difficult situations, and such always happen in life.
A chance to be active, pursue passions and make new friends
Studying is not only about classes and exams, but also about developing scientific and non-scientific passions, which is why student organizations were also involved in the events: IFMSA-Poland Warsaw Branch, PTSF Warsaw Branch, STDL WUM, STN WUM, AZS WUM and student scientific circles. An important element of each adaptation day was the presentation of the activities of the Student Government. Anna Kupczak, chairwoman of the self-government, talked about what the main tasks of the self-government are as well as what events and attractions it organizes. Next, Jan Pawłasek, Speaker of the University Student Parliament, introduced the operation of UPS. He also encouraged the newly admitted to be active and take initiative in the local government structures.
- When I was at my internship, a nurse said to us that we are from different fields of study, medical professions, but the patient is one - said Jan. - The university is one and it is made up of all students, so if you would like to get involved in the self-government and its committees, or take part in the deliberations of the parlament, which are open, or submit an idea, you are welcome to do so.
The study is also, and perhaps above all, a time for making new friends. Some will last a lifetime and prove helpful not only in private life, but also professionally. After all, the work of a medical doctor means cooperation and requires openness to different people. To make it easier to get to know new colleagues, after the formal parts of the adaptation days, first-year students took part in meetings within their dean's groups.
