First National Conference on Lung Transplantation

On November 23, the First National Conference on Lung Transplantation “PULMOTRANSPLANT” took place in Warsaw – the first event of this type in Poland. The conference was held on the initiative of the “Healthy Lungs” Association and the Department and Clinic of Internal Diseases, Pneumonology and Allergology of the Medical University of Warsaw and was under the patronage of the Polish Transplantation Society and the Polish Society of Lung Diseases.

The event participants included specialists in lung diseases, pediatric pneumonology, internal diseases, family medicine, anesthesiology, cardio- and thoracic surgery and transplantology. The goals set by the hosts were, on the one hand, to familiarize doctors with various specialties with indications, contraindications and effects of lung transplantation treatment, and, on the other hand, to exchange experiences between centers using this treatment method.

Topics covered included:

  • evolution of indications for lung transplantation,
  • the transplant qualification process and related logistic issues,
  • immunosuppressive treatment,
  • infection prevention,
  • early and late complications after transplantation,
  • organization of patient care after lung transplantation. 

The presented cases were an opportunity to discuss procedures and exchange experiences, and also gave the event a practical dimension.

The speakers and moderators of the session were experts from all the seven centers dealing with lung transplantation in Poland: dr hab. Jacek  Wojarski oraz  dr Kamila Stachowicz-Chojnacka from the Medical University of Gdańsk, dr Maciej Urlik i lek. Małgorzata Węcławek from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, Zabrze, dr hab. Marek Ochman i lek. Dagmara Galle from the Wielkopolska Centre of Pulmunology and Thoracosurgery of Eugenia and Janusz Zeyland, dr Maria Piotrowska z Wojewódzkiego Hospital in Szczecin, dr Mirosław Nęcki from the The John Paul II Specjalist Hospital in Kraków. dr Jakub Staromłyński i prof. Piotr Suwalski from the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration in Warsaw and dr Katarzyna Błońska, prof. Rafał Krenke, prof. Bartosz Kubisa, dr hab. Marta Maskey-Warzęchowska, prof. Krzysztof Mucha, dr hab. Tadeusz Przybyłowski i mgr Krzysztof Zając from the Medical University of Warsaw. The event was also attended by the National Consultant in the field of transplantology, professor Michał Grąt.
