Our clinician - a national consultant

Prof. Michal Grąt, Head of the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery MUW, has become the new national consultant in clinical transplantology. The term will last five years.

Prof. Grąt is a graduate of our university. He is an outstanding clinician, surgeon and scientist. He started his research activities already during his studies. He received many valuable awards for it, such as the Diamond Grant and the Dr. Waclaw Mayz Medical Laurel awarded by the Polish Academy of Sciences. From the beginning, he focused mainly on topics related to liver and biliary tract surgery. In 2013, almost a year after graduation, he received his doctoral degree. The research underlying his doctoral dissertation led to the development of new international criteria for qualifying patients with hepatocellular carcinoma for liver transplantation. He received his postdoctoral degree in 2016 and his professorial appointment in 2020. In September 2022, he became head of the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery UCC MUW. Last year, 258 liver transplants were performed there. This included the first transplantation of one divided liver to two recipients in Poland.

The tasks of national consultants

The tasks of national consultants include initiating national epidemiological studies and their evaluation, forecasting needs in their field, advising and cooperating with the Center for Medical Examinations and the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education. The consultants also receive requests to refer patients for treatment abroad.
