Innovative thrombus removal procedure

The latest system for removing thrombus from vessels has been used at the Department of Cardiology MUW. This is one of the first applications of the minimally invasive system – AlphaVac, in Europe.

The procedure was performed after CE certification and FDA registration of a new indication for the use of AlphaVac system developed by Angiodynamics. It is a new device for the fully percutaneous, non-surgical removal of thromboembolic material from the venous system. It is also used in the treatment of acute pulmonary embolism.

The AlphaVac system is distinguished from other devices of this type by the fact that it can be used to perform manual aspiration of thrombus, and there is no need for an extracorporeal circulation pump.

The principle of operation resembles the mechanism of "suctioning" and "vacuuming" the vessels from the inside.

The procedure was performed in a patient with infective endocarditis on a dialysis catheter who developed thromboembolic complications.
Such innovative treatments would not be possible without the integrated, interdisciplinary work of interventional cardiologists who are a core component of the early response team in pulmonary embolism (Dr. Arkadiusz Pietrasik, Prof. Janusz Kochman, Prof. Marcin Grabowski), echonavigators (Monika Budnik, MD, PhD) and specialists involved in the comprehensive treatment of patients with infective endocarditis (Agnieszka Kołodzińska, MD, PhD, Frederic Daniluk, MD).
