On Congenital Heart Defects. Lectures and Training Sessions at MUW

The PediCardia Scientific and Training Conference brought together 188 medical, paramedic, nursing, and medical students. High-level content was delivered by prominent speakers involved in medical education.

The inaugural lecture, delivered by Prof. Bożena Werner, addressed broadly defined issues related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Emphasis was placed on congenital heart defects, especially atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects, as well as arrhythmias, conduction disorders, and electrotherapy.

The topics were explored from multiple perspectives:

  • embryology and anatomy
  • echocardiographic diagnostics
  • electrocardiography, including analysis of characteristic ECG changes in patients with congenital heart defects
  • surgical treatment, covering current approaches to cardiac surgery and less invasive percutaneous interventions

In addition, the topic of prenatal diagnosis of cardiac anomalies was discussed, including the capabilities of current imaging techniques and potential treatment strategies, both intrauterine and postnatal.

Participants also had the opportunity to engage in hands-on workshops held at MUW’s modern Centre for Medical Simulation, which included:

  • training in the fundamentals  and interpretation of echocardiography
  • ECG-based analysis of clinical cases
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) training using emergency medical simulation

PediCardia 2025 provided a unique combination of cutting-edge knowledge, practical skill development, and networking within the medical community focused on paediatric cardiology.

The event took place at the Children’s Clinical Hospital of the University Clinical Centre at the Medical University of Warsaw on 22 March 2025, under the patronage of Professor Rafał Krenke, Rector of MUW. It was organised by the Students’ Scientific Club at the Department of Paediatric Cardiology and General Paediatrics. Prof. Bożena Werner, Head of the Clinic, and Dr Piotr Wieniawski, the supervisor of the Scientific Club, oversaw the scientific programme of the conference. The organising committee was chaired by student Natalia Pawłowska, president of the Students’ Scientific Club, and included Magdalena Warych, Jakub Zabłocki and Karolina Krysińska.
