The “Discover our Faculty” workshop is organized as part of the initiative of the “Touch Science - Meetings with the Faculty of Pharmacy MUW” program.
Meeting with the faculty authorities
This year, the event began with a meeting of young people with Piotr Luliński, PharmD, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and Agnieszka Bazylko, PharmD, PhD, Vice Dean for Pharmacy Education. The event was led by Dr. Monika Franczak-Rogowska, workshop coordinator.
- Lots of work awaits you. There will be few lectures, lots of individual work. You will experience the kind of classes that our students have - Dr. Monika Franczak-Rogowska said at the introduction.
The dean told the high school students about the fields of study at the Faculty of Pharmacy and what kind of knowledge the students gain in each of them. He also briefly presented the rules of recruitment. In turn, Agnieszka Bazylko, PharmD, PhD, emphasized employment opportunities the graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy have.
Working with reagents and other practical classes
After meeting with the faculty authorities, the high school students were divided into small groups and began the workshops. Very interesting were the classes where participants identified selected pharmacologically active substances based on the results of reactions with various reagents. This task had to be performed individually - and as a result, amazing colors and even special effects appeared in test tubes...
In another group, participants determined the content of pharmacologically active substances in preparations of industrial production, another team determined vitamin C in cosmetics by various methods or studied its properties. Still another, at the same time, learned how to draw blood for testing or prepared cultures in petri dishes in the microbiology lab.
Agnieszka Bazylko, PharmD, PhD, led a very interesting workshop on essential oils - their distillation and testing methods. And Dr. Andrew Parzonko talked about animal cell culture.
Through practical activities, the high school students could see what studies look like in the Faculty of Pharmacy. And they enjoyed this practical aspect, especially the activities with reagents. The high school students were also able to meet the students of the Student Government of the Faculty of Pharmacy and learn their perspective on not only the studies itself but also student life in the broader sense.
The high school students had classes at the following departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy: Department of Drug Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, Chair and Department of Pharmaceutical Biology, Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Bioanalysis, Department of Organic and Physical Chemistry, Chair and Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacogenomics.
The event was also attended by the representatives of the Polish Association of Pharmacy Students and the Student Association of Laboratory Diagnosticians.
The participants in the workshops were high school students from five Warsaw high schools - XLVIII Edward Dembowski High School, XVIII Jan Zamoyski High School, V Prince Józef Poniatowski High School, CXXXVII Robert Schuman High School with Bilingual Departments, and the “Parasol” Battalion Social High School No. 4. Young people from Chełm from the II General Gustav Orlicz-Dreszer High School also came.
