Professor Kuśmierczyk is a specialist in cardiac surgery, general surgery and clinical transplantology. The professor's main scientific interests are: surgical treatment of patients with aortic aneurysms, including thoracoabdominal, minimally invasive treatment of valvular heart defects, congenital heart defects in adolescents and adults, surgical treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mechanical circulatory support as well as heart transplantation (also in congenital defects of this organ).
In 2018, as the head of the team of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Institute of Cardiology in Anin, the professor conducted, together with specialists from the Chair and Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery MUW, the first simultaneous heart and liver transplantation operation in Poland. In 2022, the professor performed with the team of the Department of Cardiac Surgery UCC MUW, which he heads, the first heart transplantation at the University Clinical Center MUW (at the same time the first heart transplantation in a child at UCC MUW). In 2023, the team of the Department of Heart, Chest and Transplant Surgery UCC MUW, headed by the professor, performed the first lung transplant at UCC MUW, while in 2024, the OCS Heart (organ care system) was used at the department to transport an organ from donor to recipient for the first time in the history of Polish heart transplantation.
Since 2014, Prof. Kuśmierczyk served as a consultant of the Mazovian region in the field of cardiac surgery. The professor also served as chairman of the National Transplantation Council for the 2018-2022 term, secretary general of the Polish Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (2016-2018), and then president of the Polish Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (2018-2021). In 2016, he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland for the development of heart transplantation.
The tasks of national consultants
The tasks of national consultants include initiating national epidemiological studies and their evaluation, forecasting needs in their field, advising and cooperating with the Center for Medical Examinations and the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education. The consultants also receive requests to refer patients for treatment abroad.
