Our representation at the 60th Varsoviada

Varsoviada is a huge sports event dedicated to first year students of the Warsaw universities. However, it is not for students only. A regular part of the competition and the focal point of the entire event is the so-called Rectors Triathlon, a contest for representatives of university authorities. This year, WUM Medical University of Warsaw was represented by the Rector himself - professor Zbigniew Gaciong.

Varsoviada is organized by the Academic Sports Association Warsaw. About 1000 students take part in the event each year. For most of them, it is the first university student event. They compete in the following disciplines: basketball, volleyball, futsal, cross country running, swimming, indoor rower and table tennis. Students from 15 universities applied to this year’s contest. The finals took place on November 11 on the University of Physical Education site.

WUM student contestants

Rectors’ Triathlon

Representatives of six universities took part in the Rectors’ Triathlon: prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of WUM Medical University of Warsaw; prof. Robert Zalewski, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs of the Warsaw University of Technology; Krzysztof Borkowski, PhD, Vice-Dean for National Security faculty at UTH Helena Chodkowska University of Technology and Economics in Warsaw; Robert Grey, Chancellor of the Warsaw University; prof. Bartosz Molik, Rector of AWF University of Physical Education; as well as Janusz Samel, director of the Office for Sports and Recreation of the capital city of Warsaw, who participated as a non-ranking athlete.

The representatives of academic bodies competed in: basketball throw, shot on goal, and laser shot. It was a lot of fun with a pinch of competition. The winner was prof. Robert Zalewski from the Warsaw University of Technology.

A traditional point of Varsoviada was the laying of a wreath at Marshal Józef Piłsudski monument. This academic sports celebration has been linked to the sponsorship of the University of Physical Education in Warsaw since 1989.

Varsoviada is co-funded by the capital city of Warsaw and the Ministry of Sports and Tourism. The partners of the competition are: the University of Physical Education in Warsaw, the Warsaw University, and the Military University of Technology in Warsaw.
