Distinguished team from UCC MUW
The team consisted of specialists from the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery UCC MUW: Prof. Michał Grąt, Prof. Tadeusz Wróblewski, Dr. Konrad Kobryń, Dr. Wacław Hołówko, Wojciech Figiel, MD, PhD, Dr. Paweł Rykowski, Dr. Emilia Kruk, anesthesiologist Dr. Paula Dudek, transplant coordinator Krzysztof Zając, instrumenting nurses Anna Wąsik, Jolanta Budny, and Grzegorz Nowakowski. The team received an honorable mention in the Rynek Zdrowia Event category.
The world's first supportive liver transplantation in a patient after injury to her own organ as a result of a traffic accident was performed on May 31, 2024. The procedure took about seven hours. By using the regenerative capacity of the patient's own remaining liver fragment, with the temporary support of the transplanted deceased donor liver fragment, the 50-year-old patient avoided transplantation of the entire organ, left the hospital with her own healthy liver, does not require immunosuppressive treatment and did not develop significant complications. The main award - Portrait of Polish Medicine in the Rynek Zdrowia Event category - honored the launch of the program “Treatment of infertility involving medically assisted procreation procedures, including in vitro fertilization, conducted in a medically assisted procreation center, for 2024-2028.” The award was received by: Izabela Leszczyna, Minister of Health, Monika Wielichowska, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm, MP Agnieszka Pomaska and Małgorzata Rozenek-Majdan.
About the Portraits of Polish Medicine competition
Portraits of Polish Medicine are awards for individuals, institutions and entities that have achieved significant successes in the spheres of management of medical facilities, development of therapies, improvement of the health of society and functioning of the health care system in Poland. The competition jury consists of, among others, the winners of previous editions of Portraits of Polish Medicine, representatives of central institutions, medical universities, clinicians, health care managers, experts, representatives of industries cooperating with the medical sector.
Last year, the main award in the Rynek Zdrowia Event category also went to the team from the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery UCC MUW, headed by Professor Michał Grąt, for carrying out a pioneering procedure involving dividing an organ taken from a deceased donor and transplanting the right part of the liver for one adult recipient and the left part of the liver for a second adult recipient.
