The competition's jury, consisting of experts - representatives of many fields of medicine, evaluated the candidates - scientists under 40 years of age for their scientific achievements, involvement in activities in the public space, and prospects for further development and chances for influence in Polish medicine and health care in the coming years. As a result, 10 people were selected, including one winner. This year, on the occasion of the competition's round anniversary, the winners of a new category - "Rising Star of Polish Medicine" - were also selected. This title was given to three medical students.
Supertalent in Medicine
Aleksandra Gąsecka-van der Pol, MD, PhD, a cardiology specialist and research and teaching assistant from the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology UCC MUW, took fourth place in the plebiscite. She did her medical studies in Warsaw, Vienna and Zurich. In 2015, she graduated with honors from the medical field of study at MUW, receiving the rector's award for the best graduate. She received the title of Doctor of Medicine and Health Sciences "cum laude" in 2020, and the title of Doctor Habilitated of Medicine and Health Sciences "cum laude" in 2022. In the same year, she obtained the title of cardiology specialist and began training in interventional cardiology. As part of the completion of her habilitation thesis, she completed a one-year internship at Utrecht University. She was also elected to the board of directors of the prestigious Young Thrombosis Researchers Group of the European Society of Cardiology (2018-2022) and the Quality Improvement Committee of the European Association of Cardiovascular Interventions (from 2022). She is currently leading teams on several research grants in collaboration with researchers from the Universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Marseille, Birmingham, Helsinki and Vienna.
By the decision of the competition’s jury, the winner of the plebiscite was Prof. Mateusz K. Hołda, physician, scientist, university teacher, cadriomorphologist.
A rising star of Polish medicine
Karol Momot is a sixth-year medical student at MUW. He is the leader of the scientific circle "QRS syndrome" operating at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Physiology, MUW. Within the scientific circle, he participates in five scientific projects funded by MUW and MEiN. He is a member of the Polish Society of Cardiology. He conducts workshops for students: ECG, ECHO of the heart in laboratory animals, retrograde coronary perfusion by Langendorff method. He co-teaches classes for students in human physiology on the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. He is co-author of the elective course "Coronary vessels in clinical cases". He is the author and co-author of numerous speeches and reports at national and international conferences. Since 2022, he has been working with the ablation team of the Międzyleski Hospital in Warsaw. He associates his future with electrophysiology.
The "Rising Star of Polish Medicine" award also went to Alicja Kamińska of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences and Stanislaw Surma of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice.
