Grounds for awarding Dr. Tomasz Dzierżanowski
Doctor Tomasz Dzierżanowski, acting chair of WUM Palliative Medicine Clinical Department, was appreciated for his commitment to patients with life threatening conditions involving hardly bearable pain.
Fragment of the statement of grounds for the award, on Dr. Tomasz Dzierżanowski: “A doctor by calling, accompanying patients on their rough paths, who tries everything to not leave those patients alone and in pain.” He says: “Today, we often tend to forget that our lives end with death. Dying, decease and suffering are parts of life... What matters is not to leave a dying patient alone behind a partition screen because dying alone is the worst death there is.”
Dr. Dzierżanowski was further appreciated for not only helping his patient personally but also by fighting for change in the organization of palliative care and its availability.
The winner is also vice-president of the Polish Palliative Medicine Society and medical director of Caritas foundation of Warsaw Praga Diocese.
