EU grant for building a virtual patient care game

The game will be built on five steps of evidence-based practice, as an innovative tool to support the student training process. The project will be executed with the Erasmus+ funding received by a consortium of European universities of which WUM is a member.

About the project

Within the framework of the “Evidence based practice in healthcare: an online escape room game” project, universities are going to develop a set of innovative methods and tools that will be used in training for nursing and obstetrics students. The online game will be the primary tool. Leaders of the WUM team are: Małgorzata Stefaniak, MD, PhD hab., from the Gynecology & Obstetrics Teaching Department, and Łukasz Czyżewski, MD, PhD hab., Vice-Dean of the WUM Faculty of Health Sciences, head of the Geriatric Nursing Institute.

– Our top priority is to build the ability to use reliable and updated knowledge sources in planning and providing patient care. This is very important for the future clinical practice – dr. Małgorzata Stefaniak explains.

Five steps of Evidence Based Practice

The game will be built on five steps of evidence based practice in virtual patient care. These are: asking the right clinical question; acquiring best scientific evidence; critical appraisal of the search results; applying the evidence in daily practice; and assessing the efficiency of practical decisions or changes implemented on the basis of scientific evidence.

Dr. Małgorzata Stefaniak: – Evidence Based Practice means using scientific evidence in an informed, clear and systematic way, taking into account the patients’ individual needs and values. EBP implementation is crucial for the improvement of patient care quality and patient safety.

Consortium partners

The following universities are WUM’s partners on the project: University Colleges Leuven-Limburg of Belgium, Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Politécnico e Universitário CRL (CESPU) of Portugal, Laurea Ammattikorkea Koulu OY of Finland, and Universitat Autonoma De Barcelona of Spain. Moreover, Danish experts from LudusXR Aps center have also been involved in the project, specializing in development of computer games and digital tools used for university student education.

The grant was awarded in June 2023, and the implementation started on November 1, 2023. Project completion is scheduled at 2026-10-31.
