The students of the Medical University of Warsaw became also became involved in the project Dethroning - we take the crown off the virus. This initiative, coordinated by the WUM Students 'council, was awarded by the Students' Parliament of the Republic of Poland in the "Pro Juvenes" competition. Volunteers supported employees of Warsaw health care institutions and those of the sanitary and epidemiological services in Warsaw, during the coronavirus pandemic. During nearly 3 months, in cooperation with 25 companies and 40 private individuals, we managed to provide support to 35 institutions located in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship.
Our academic community does not forget about those physicians and pharmacists who have passed away. Every year, as part of Medical Powązki, he honors the memory of the dead by cleaning their graves and lighting candles. The participants of this event also have the opportunity to learn more about the deceased associated with medicine and pharmacy in Warsaw.
Blood doner campaigns are organized at the University. An example is the Brotherhood of Blood organized by students of the Faculty of Health Sciences since 2007 and the “Stream of Life” - an initiative of students associated in IFMSA-Poland, Warsaw Branch. Blood is collected in the ambulance of the Regional Center for Blood Donation and Blood Treatment. Volunteers complete a donor form, have basic tests performed and are qualified as suitable to be doners, their blood is then taken with all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the donor and staff.
MUW volunteers also support the homeless. As part of the Invisible program, in cooperation with external organizations, they conduct activities aimed at improving the situation of the homeless and the poor. These include collecting clothes, personal care products, food and medicines. They also organize trips to train stations - during which they distribute sandwiches and hot tea. They take part in winter patrols, where the participants provide medical help to the homeless, and accompany those who need this, during visits to public clinics. As part of the project, information campaigns are run, making people aware of how they can help people in crisis homeless situations. The Student Clinic is a campaign conducted in cooperation with “Doctors of Hope”, it consists of carrying out voluntary work in a clinic for the poor and homeless in Warsaw's Wola district. Students learn the basic practical skills needed in the daily work of doctors, but most of all help people who, for various reasons, are deprived of medical care.
Patients living in hospices, can also count on the selfless help of students under the HOPEspicjum project. Patients there often need the company of other people and contact with the outside world. Here volunteers give them there attention, listen to their stories, read books and just talk to them.
Students get involved in an activitis supporting Amnesty International, such as the Letter Writing Marathon. Every year, for one week, stands are organized in the buildings of our University, where each student and employee can write their own appeal to stop the violation of human rights in different countries of the world
