Mariusz Tomaniak, MD, PhD, as Supertalent in Medicine

The winner of the Supertalents in Medicine competition is a specialist in cardiology, a research and teaching assistant professor at the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology UCC MUW. The competition's jury, composed of renowned experts and authorities in Polish medicine, recognized him for his clinical activities and scientific interests, which focus on invasive cardiology and diagnostic imaging. His achievements include the development and validation of a new method of coronary angiography analysis - more sensitive in diagnosing significant lesions in the coronary arteries.

Mariusz Tomaniak, MD, PhD - who is this year's winner?

Mariusz Tomaniak, MD, PhD, is a specialist in cardiology. In addition to his position as a research and teaching assistant professor at the 1st Department of Cardiology UCC MUW, he is also an invasive cardiology operator and on-call cardiologist at the Invasive Cardiology Laboratory of the University Clinical Center MUW. In addition, he is a consulting cardiologist at the European Cardiovascular Research Institute in Rotterdam, and a cardiologist researcher at Erasmus University Medical Center. He is also a member of the European Association of Percutaneous  Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) Committee on Research, Digital and Innovation (EAPCI Research, Digital and Innovation Committee, 2022-2024).

His clinical and research interests focus on invasive cardiology and diagnostic imaging, particularly the individualization of therapy for patients with coronary artery disease through new antiplatelet pharmacotherapy regimens and the application of modern cardiac diagnostic techniques and algorithms using optical coherence tomography (OCT), intracoronary ultrasound (IVUS), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and computer modeling techniques for fluid dynamics, among others. His achievements include the development and validation - in collaboration with bioengineers from Rotterdam and London - of a new method of coronary artery analysis (known as vessel fractional flow reserve - vFFR) that is more sensitive in diagnosing significant coronary artery lesions.

In 2021, Mariusz Tomaniak, MD, PhD, was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Scientific Achievement and Best Habilitation Dissertation in Medical Sciences. He was recognized for his significant contribution to the ongoing discussion on the individualization of antiplatelet therapy in patients after percutaneous revascularization and the tremendous practical value of the research conducted. In the same year, he received an award from the Minister of Health for a series of publications: New Strategies for Antiplatelet Pharmacotherapy after Percutaneous Coronary Interventions in a Patient Population at High Risk of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Complications. He is also the recipient of many other awards. In 2022, he was among the 10 winners of the Supertalents in Medicine competition, taking second place.
