Teaching pre-clinical subjects in the field of medicine

How to teach theoretical subjects to future doctors in a modern and interesting way? Knowledge and experience in this area were shared by our teachers during a training course organized for academic teachers from Ukraine. The course was held on March 27-29, 2023, and brought together a total of nearly 400 people from a dozen Ukrainian universities.

The training entitled "Teaching in pre-clinical science module in the field of medicine" was organized by scientific and teaching teams from:

  • Department of Social Medicine and Public Health, headed by Prof. Aneta Nitsch-Osuch
  • Chair and Department of Experimental and Clinical Physiology, headed by Prof. Agnieszka Cudnoch-Jędrzejewska
  • Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, headed by Prof. Dagmara Mirowska-Guzel

During the three days, innovative methods and forms of education used in these departments in pre-clinical subjects were presented, with a special focus on internationalized educational standards and good teaching practices.

Prof. Aneta Nitsch-Osuch: - In October 2022, we hosted at MUW a delegation of academics from the Bohomolets National Medical University in Kiev. Already at that time, our guests expressed their desire to participate in a series of training courses and conferences devoted to teaching in the medical field, expecting us to share our experiences in adapting education to EU standards, as required by the Bologna process. In addition, and perhaps above all, we wanted - so humanly speaking - to show our support for the Ukrainian staff and help, as we can and know best, in a cruel time of war.

Issues covered during the training

Prof. Aneta Nitsch-Osuch, Dr. Katarzyna Okręglicka and Dr. Magdalena Bogdan from the Department of Social Medicine and Public Health told how hospital and environmental hygiene, epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases are taught in the post-pandemic era. They also presented current teaching methods in the area of public health in response to changing social needs in this area, including those relating to patient rights, medical jurisprudence, health systems, health inequalities.

The second day of the training began with Prof. Agnieszka Cudnoch-Jędrzejewska, head of the Department of Experimental and Clinical Physiology, who discussed how to implement tutoring methods in research and teaching activities in the department she heads. Then Dr. Liana Puchalska, Dr. Agnieszka Wsół and Dr. Joanna Michalik presented the assumptions and methodology of teaching the subject of physiology and pathophysiology, and told what it looks like in daily work with students. For the speakers from the department, the opportunity to present the teaching achievements of the unit in front of colleagues from Ukraine was a double challenge due to the fact that Dr. Liana Puchalska graduated from the medical faculty of the Vinnytsia National Pirogov Medical University (Ukraine).

The last day was devoted to teaching pharmacology and clinical pharmacology. Prof. Dagmara Mirowska-Guzel and her team, Dr. Aleksandra Paź and Dr. Agata Karpińska, presented the principles of constructing the syllabus of the course, the knowledge learning outcomes indicated for implementation, skills and social competencies, and the methods of verifying the expected learning outcomes.

Invitation to the events

The organization of the training was possible thanks to the funding our university received from the National Center for Research and Development for the project "TIME 2 MUW didactic excellence as an opportunity for the development of the Medical University of Warsaw." The training will be continued with two more events: a hybrid conference "Quality of Education Culture Day " (May 26) and a course "Standardization of teaching and quality of education in the field of medicine" (May 29-June 2), including a study visit and visitation of selected teaching activities.
