Cardiologists Prof. Marcin Grabowski and Marcin Michalak, PhD from the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology of the UCC MUW, headed by Prof. Grzegorz Opolski, were the first in Poland and among the first in the world to successfully implant a second electrode-free pacemaker in the same patient. The procedure was conducted on a 75-year-old patient diagnosed with a bradycardia type arrhythmia whose pacemaker batteries died in less than three years. The second pacemaker that was implanted is a micra-type device.
Electrodeless stimulators are the new generation devices and observation of the first patients with such implants date back only several years. However, this number is rising because patients with old implants require new ones. The procedure must be conducted with utmost precaution not only because of the difficult location of the stimulator in the ventricle (next to the existing device), but also because of potential interferences between both devices.
