MUW signed letter of intent with the Iraqi Ministry of Health and the Medical City Hospital Complex in Baghdad

On February 12, 2020, Prof. Krzysztof J. Filipiak signed on behalf of the Rector a letter of intent to facilitate cooperation in the field of medicine between Medical University of Warsaw and the Republic of Iraq. The ceremonial signing took place at the Iraqi Ministry of Health.

The visit to Iraq by Prof. Filipiak and Dr. Marcin Kaczor, Manager of MUW’s Medical Simulation Center was a next step in the ongoing discussions between MUW and Iraqi officials. MUW-Iraqi relations were first established by His Magnificence at the beginning of his term of office. The Deputy Rector for Internationalization, Promotion and Development, Prof. Lidia Rudnicka, is now overseeing the process.

While in Iraq, Prof. Filipiak and Dr. Kaczor met with the Minister of Health of Iraq, Prof. Jaafar Allawi; the Director of the Medical City Hospital Complex, Dr. Hassan M. Abbas Al-Temimi; the Director of the Accreditation Center for Medical Specialties of 22 Arab Countries, Dr. Tarik K. Alassadi; and, the Secretary General of the Center for Medical Specialization in Iraq, Dr. Jawad Ibrahim Al Sharifem.
Prof. Filipiak and Dr. Kaczor visited the Medical City Hospital Complex, the largest hospital complex in Baghdad and in the Middle East. Representatives of the Medical City Hospital Complex in Baghdad explained how they would like to set up a medical simulation program and build a medical simulation center. It would be the first such center in Iraq. Dr. Marcin Kaczor, Manager of MUW’s Medical Simulation Center therefore spoke in detail about the Medical Simulation Center and planned developments.

The Medical City Hospital Complex in Baghdad represents a modern academic center but suffers from a shortage of medical staff and specialists. Therefore, cooperation would entail exchanges in the areas of teaching, research and clinical work, and, in particular, short-term clinical internships and training at Medical University of Warsaw’s Medical Simulation Center.

During their visit, Prof. Filipiak and Dr. Kaczor were shown a modern oncology and radiotherapy center, a PET laboratory, and the construction of a new hospital cyclotron.  Individually, Prof. Filipiak visited the Cardiology Department, hemodynamic laboratory, electro-cardiology laboratory, and Cardiac Surgery Department, and Dr. Kaczor became acquainted with the functioning of the Hospital. He visited the post-surgery recovery rooms, the surgery ward, the emergency room, and intensive care units.
