MUW Scientist Invents New COVID-19 Protective Equipment for Healthcare Workers

Dr. Marcin Kaczor, an anaesthesiologist and intensive care specialist, as well as, the Project Manager of the Medical Simulation Center at the Medical University of Warsaw, developed a new protective medical appliance to prevent viral aerosol shedding from patients with SARS-CoV-2 virus and other highly pathogenic human coronaviruses during common medical procedures. The tent like design creates a protection between the healthcare provider and ventilated patient with a coronavirus.

In an interview, Dr. Kaczor explained that the idea emerged while conducting training on the safe use of personal protective equipment in the MUW Medical Simulation Center.  According to Dr. Kaczor, the tent like design of the new protective equipment is a simple construction, easy to use, disposable and economical. In addition, “it can be used widely in healthcare,” says Dr. Kaczor. “For example, explains Dr. Kaczor, it can be used in situations when we are caring for patients with a coronavirus or uncertain if the patient is with a coronavirus.  It can be used in inpatient treatment or hospitals, in operating rooms, intensive care units, ER, and in hospital emergency transportation.  Perhaps it can also be used in computer tomography and MRI laboratories and, most importantly, in emergency medicine. The main purpose of the invention is to provide healthcare personnel with additional personal protection. The tent like design, continues Dr. Kaczor, is to accommodate the performance of many common medical procedures, such as intubation and extubation of ventilated patients, securing vent tubing, etc.”

The prototype is made of a 0.3 mm thick translucent foil. The tent like equipment covers the area around the patient's head and has two openings with sleeves with elastic ends. The new protective medical appliance resembles a small pop up tent.

The structure requires a ground stabilization system and reinforcement, like adhesive tape.

"The new protective equipment will be produced in Poland, using Polish materials. The cost of production will be less than 200 PLN per unit. The product is unique in the medical market,” says its creator, Dr. Kaczor. The Polish Ministry of Health has already put in a first order for 8000 units.
