Innovative endoprosthetic surgery

The total knee replacement surgery with the anatomical prosthesis PERSONA PS with the use of the dynamic balancer FUZION Zimmer Biomet took place for the first time in Poland, in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation of the Faculty of Medicine.

The procedure was performed by a team composed of: Bartosz Maciąg, MD, (a PhD student of MUW) and Artur Stolarczyk, MD, PhD. The operating room assistants were Bożena Janczak and Ewa Mielcarz, and the anesthesia was performed by Kinga Rzeszotarska, MD.

The functions of the device used include assisting the surgeon in determining the precise bone cutting surfaces, with a precision of 1 mm and 1 degree, and selecting the appropriate soft tissue tension. This instrumentation was used in a patient with a valgus joint misalignment (the knee joint "bends" inward). The surgeon had to determine the precise bone cutting surfaces, with a precision of 1 mm and 1 degree, and help to select the appropriate soft tissue tension.

In this type of rare deformity (about 10% cases of osteoarthritis of the knee), it is extremely challenging to choose the correct femoral component rotation of the prosthesis and ligament tension. With the use of FUZION Zimmer Biomet, the patient regained full range of motion of the joint, its stability and correct movement of the patella without the risk of dislocation.

The Head of the Department, Artur Stolarczyk, MD, PhD, together with his team are pioneers in Poland in the use of the most modern anatomical endoprostheses, which are normally used in the most important endoprosthesis centers in the world.
