International Donor Surgery & Organ Preservation Masterclass

On June 9-11, for the first time in Central and Eastern Europe, was held a unique masterclass on procurement and preservation of abdominal organs from deceased donors - International Donor Surgery and Organ Preservation Masterclass. The training that was organized by the Department of General and Transplant Surgery, UCC MUW, included theoretical part and practical exercises. The masterclass was attended by 22 doctors from Poland, Sweden, Lithuania and Bulgaria.

The subject and scope of the classes included: organ donor evaluation and qualification, surgical techniques for organ procurement - kidney, pancreas and liver, organ storage techniques, including the use of specialized pumps that pass oxygen-rich liquid through the organ outside the body (mechanical perfusion). Pumps enable better use of organs that are in short supply compared to the needs.

Trainings on organs took place in the Medical Training Centre in Brzeska Street in Warsaw and in the Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Jabłonna.

The group of lecturers consisted of 8 foreign and 9 Polish specialists who are the world experts in the field of organ procurement and preservation.

The event was held under the patronage of the Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw, the Polish Transplant Association, Polish Transplant Coordinating Centre "Poltransplant" and the Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw. The course was accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) under the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS).
