The classes were organized by the Center for Medical Simulation and Innovation of the Medical University of Warsaw and consisted of theoretical part and workshops. The first part was based on series of lectures on primary total knee replacement using the Journey II BCS anatomical endoprosthesis. After the theoretical part, participants had the opportunity to learn practical skills in conditions similar to those in the operating room. They practiced on cadavers that were not formalin-fixed but frozen and then thawed before the course, thus having the properties of living tissue. This very feature makes them widely used in postgraduate education of physicians, especially among orthopedists, otolaryngologists, maxillofacial surgeons or dentists.
The course culminated with the presentation of interesting cases of patients undergoing primary knee replacement, and possible problems and complications were discussed.
The scientific director of the course was Artur Stolarczyk, MD, PhD, who heads the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Międzylesie Specialist Hospital. "I am extremely pleased that once again my team and I were able to organize and conduct a workshop on knee replacement, especially since it was the first time in Polish history that a course on anatomical endoprostheses was held in a public university! It is wonderful that we are setting trends in the teaching of orthopedics in our country, which until now has been an extremely neglected area" – said Artur Smolarczyk, MD, PhD. The lectures and workshops were also conducted by doctors from the above mentioned Department: Krzysztof Modzelewski, MD, and Bartosz Maciąg, MD.
