How to use technology to take care of the patient experience? Students from MUW and UW worked together on Digital Health solutions

The InnoHub creative competition, organized by the University of Warsaw in cooperation with our university, has come to an end. Over two days, nearly 30 students from UW and MUW developed digital health solution designs that could change the nature and quality of healthcare.

Under the supervision of facilitators and experts from, among others: medical industry, psychology, IT, the competition participants, divided into five interdisciplinary teams, created original solutions with consideration and understanding the patients’ problems and needs. The young innovators were tasked with making the patient better understand how they are being treated and making them feel comfortable during this process. The work also included a prototyping and solution testing phase.

The culminating point of the competition were 5-minute presentations of the projects. The jury, after heated deliberations, selected the winning solutions.
First place went to Akcja Innowacja team composed of: Mateusz Maternia, Aleksandra Zagajewska, Joanna Dyrwal and Julita Dreslerska for the AlzCare application project. The application is designed for caregivers of Alzheimer's patients. It is supposed to facilitate organization of the day, e.g. by reminding about next doses of medicines or upcoming doctor's appointments. In the future, the authors are also planning to create a GPS wristband and a tool through which caregivers can exchange experiences.
Second place was awarded to the MachineMeds team composed of: Mateusz Piętak, Mateusz Błajda, Magdalena Gałach, Karolina Szałata for the project Med Survey. Med Survey is a tool whereby part of the medical history will already be conducted before the visit to the doctor. One of the goals of the project is to reduce patient stress related to the medical interview.
The jury also awarded an honorable mention to the e-Zdrówko team composed of: Anna Golińska, Mikołaj Pipka, Krzysztof Jankowski, Joanna Rudna, Maciej Bulka for the project of the same name.
The e-Zdrówko platform is intended to make it easier for the patient to share tests and the course of their illness with their doctor.

As part of the prize, the winning teams will take a course in agile project management.

During the competition, experts shared their perspectives on understanding the #DigitalHealth field, among them were: Anna Wójcicka, MD, PhD, co-founder of Warsaw Genomics, Jan Poleszczuk, MD, PhD, Laboratory of Mathematical Modelling of Physiological Processes, Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering, Polish Academy of Sciences, Agnieszka Kościuszko-Wyrwał, Roche Global IT Solution Centre and Alicja Sekret, the originator of Patients to Patients app. The participants were welcomed by Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, UW Vice Rector for Research and manager of the Excellence Initiative - Research University programme, and Prof. Paweł Włodarski Vice Rector for International Relations, Development and Promotion MUW.
