The document was prepared by the ESC working group, chaired by Prof. Piotr Pruszczyk from the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology with the Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Venous Thromboembolism. The recommendations have been accepted by the European Society of Pulmonology. Experts described the most important elements of care for patients after acute pulmonary embolism (PE). This is a practical guide to patient treatment and for the follow-up of patients. Its authors emphasize that pulmonary embolism is a life-changing diagnosis. Thus, treatment and follow-up must extend far beyond the early phase of anticoagulant therapy.
Patients, especially in the first year after diagnosis, may develop serious complications. Prognosis is improved by identification of risk factors and optimal choice of anticoagulants. Lifestyle guidelines, such as sports participation, are also important. The document contains an expanded descriptive version of a holistic care program for patients after PE.
