Basic medical assistance is provided at Warsaw Central and East Railway Stations by several hundred students of the Medical University of Warsaw, working as part of the Ambulans z Serca Foundation. At East Station they are on duty four hours a day from 12a.m. to 12 p.m. At Central Station they are on duty in shifts around the clock.
- We started at West Station, then we were moved to East Station. At the same time we got involved in helping at Central Station. On the latter we still do not have a permanent doctor and a proper medical aid station. The aid station, which is there, was organized by the FORTIOR foundation and our students under the watchful eye of Jantek Mikulski. In this respect, it is better on East station. There we have a medical container with a doctor and an ambulance from the Ambulans z Serca Foundation. We mainly patrol the station with medical backpacks and help in the ambulance - says Alex Fitas, a fifth-year medical student at MUW and a coordinator of the medical aid campaign.
The students are faced with a variety of injuries and ailments. From minor wounds that just need to be disinfected and a simple bandage applied, to fractures that require orthopedic intervention. There are also people with severe hypertension. There are women with advanced pregnancy, sometimes at risk. Unfortunately, there is a growing number of "stomach flu" at East Station. Children are suffering from diarrhea and vomiting en masse. They are crowded into a small space, sleeping on blankets spread out on the floor. These are dire conditions not only in terms of epidemics. There are also a lot of respiratory infections.
When asked what they need most, Alex answers that what Central Station lacks most is top-down management and coordination. The experienced people are needed as well as decent medical facilities. And, on an ad hoc basis, antiemetics, antidiarrheals and electrolytes will be useful. - I would also like to ask all people who provide food for the refugees not to bring only sweets, because then the children do not want to eat anything else and have problems with their digestive system - Alex appeals.
Not only students help. The Medical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw sp. z o.o. has started providing free internal medicine and psychological consultations in Ukrainian for Ukrainian refugees. You can find out how to enroll and what the benefits are on the website of CM WUM sp. z o.o.
MUW also provides support to foreign students fleeing Ukraine. What they need most is accommodation and a warm meal. Many of them found shelter in the MUW dormitories. This action was initiated by our students of English Division of the Faculty of Medicine. They contacted their compatriots residing in Ukraine and sent a signal to the university authorities that support was needed. So far, they have managed to help several dozen foreign students. Currently, in the dormitory on Karolkowa street we have 5 of them: one from Nigeria and 4 from Ecuador. Eight people from Rwanda are just arriving. And there is one Tunisian woman and four Nigerians living in the dorm on Battalion Pięść street.
Medical care and shelter - how we support refugees
More and more people are fleeing war-torn Ukraine every day. Many of them need medical care. Our students are involved in organizing medical assistance at Warsaw train stations. You can sign up for internal medicine consultations in Ukrainian at the Medical Center MUW.
