The aim of the START program is to recognize the most talented young scholars and encourage their further scientific development by allowing them to fully devote themselves to research work. The START Program Scholars are selected through a multi-stage competition that evaluates the quality of their scholarly achievements. The START Program winners receive an annual scholarship of PLN 28,000. They may use it for any purpose.
The scholarship is open to young scientists under the age of 30 (or older if they receive a statutory extension). The achievements of the candidates - documented by patents or publications in recognized Polish and foreign scientific periodicals - are evaluated by scholars who are authorities in their fields. Formally correct applications are first evaluated by an expert panel, which directs the best candidates for review. Each application that qualifies for this stage is examined by another three reviewers. On the basis of opinions collected at each stage of substantive assessment, the Board of the Foundation selects the winners. The decision of the Board is approved by the Council of the Foundation.
