Researchers from our university among the world's best scientists

Prof. Hanna Szajewska and Prof. Rafał Płoski are on the prestigious list prepared by Research.com. Data on Hirsch index, citations, and number of scientific publications from 2014- 2021 were taken into account when compiling the ranking.

The Top Scientists ranking is a prestigious list of the best scientists from around the world. It includes 21 fields of science. In the field of medicine, i.e. on the list of Top Medicine Scientists, there is Prof. Hanna Szajewska, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of Warsaw. The most important fields of scientific activity of our specialist are: probiotics and prebiotics, child nutrition and diet-dependent diseases (especially food allergy, celiac disease). The ranking notes that for Prof. Szajewska, the Hirsh index showing the significance of all scientific papers is 86. Our researcher has 294 publications and 30,496 citations (this refers to 2014-2021). On the list she was ranked 7422nd in the world and 5th in Poland. How does one achieve such a high position in the world of science?

- It is said that Napoleon, when selecting candidates for officer positions, considered the question, "Is he lucky?" to be especially important. Key question! I have had numerous scientific stumbles, mistakes, and failures, but many times I have just been lucky. At the right time, in the right place, I met - I still meet - the right, inspiring people. Scientific personalities - says Prof. Szajewska. And she adds: - Additionally, I really like what I do, i.e. clinical research. Unlike research in basic science, clinical trials don't get you a Nobel (I don't know of any Nobel laureate who got it for randomized trials or meta-analysis of randomized trials - in medicine, virtually everyone got it for basic research), but they do answer important clinical questions. I like to work. I'm a craftsman of science. I guess everyone who does science is one. And it makes me happy - concludes our researcher.
In addition to Prof. Hanna Szajewska, the above-mentioned ranking included 19 more scientists from our country.

Prof. Rafal Ploski, Head of the Department of Medical Genetics MUW, was listed among the Top Biology and Biochemistry Scientists. Prof. Ploski's interests concern human genetic variation in the context of medical issues. His work focuses on applying cutting-edge high-throughput DNA sequencing techniques to medical diagnostics. A significant portion of ongoing projects involve the discovery and characterization of ultra-rare, including novel, genetically determined human diseases. Prof. Ploski has published 241 papers between 2014 and 2021, with 8,658 citations and a Hirsh index of 41. This ranks him 15954th among scientists worldwide and 22nd in Poland. A total of 22 Poles made the list of top researchers in biology and biochemistry.
Professor Ploski says that an important component of his success has been choosing a research area that combines the potential of new molecular biology genetics tools, such as high-throughput DNA sequencing, with the broad clinical base available at the Medical University of Warsaw. In particular, it seems to have been an apt choice to focus his activity on the study of genetically determined ultra-rare diseases. In this field, despite growing worldwide interest, competition is still relatively low and important discoveries are possible that do not require billions of dollars and huge patient populations, as is the case, for example, in cancer research or other civilization diseases.
