The laureate of an international conference in the Netherlands

The laureate is Mateusz Gotowiec - a second-year student of the Faculty of Medicine, a member of the SKN of Experimental Medicine at the Department of Research Methodology. The presentation of the results of research in biological brachytherapy, conducted under the direction of Dr. Wiktor Paskal as part of the scientific circle's activities, earned him a victory in the "Oncology II" session during the 29th edition of The International Student Congress Of (bio)Medical Sciences. The awarded paper is entitled "New method of selective tumor cell death based on TRAIL singalling".

What is biological brachytherapy? This is a growing branch of scientific research, focusing on the use of biological agents to locally affect the body's tissues. This includes, among other things, genetically modified parts of the body to produce desired proteins. During his presentation, Mateusz Gotowiec presented the research conducted by Dr. Wiktor Paskal's team, in which genetic modification of stem cells from adipose tissue is expected to lead to the production of anti-tumor cytokines to locally affect tumor foci.

This year's congress was held July 8-10 in Groningen, the Netherlands. The theme was personalized medicine. During the three days, students from all over the world presented their research results and made international friends. Of all the abstracts submitted to the congress, the ISCOMS organizing committee selects the best ones, which are then presented at the symposium in one of a dozen thematic sessions. In addition to student presentations, the scientific program included lectures by experts and hands-on workshops.
