MUW scientists are going to examine the genesis of endolymphatic hydrops

Endolymphatic hydrops is believed to cause Meniere’s disease – a rare condition of the inner ear. Due to the co-financing awarded by the National Science Centre, the specialists from the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the UCC Medical University of Warsaw are going to attempt to identify the miRNA profile in the perilymph. The author and the principal investigator are Dr Agnieszka Jasińska-Nowacka.

Meniere’s disease is characterized by light-headedness with tinnitus and a sensation of fullness within the year and hearing impairment. It is caused by an excessive collection of endolymph – liquid in the membranous labyrinth. The condition is treated pharmacologically and surgically.

The analysis of miRNA particles expression in Meniere’s disease is a new issue, and only first mentions are being made in the literature. The study of Dr Agnieszka Jasieńska-Nowacka is innovative in nature due to the unique group of patients with clinically advanced illness and the possibility of intraoperative collection of perilymph. Detailed identification of the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of endolymphatic hydrops may assist in the identification of factors determining the aggressive course or development of Meniere’s disease. In the future, learning the epigenetic profile also gives the chance for faster diagnostics and aimed causative treatment.

The co-financing was granted by the NCN under MINIATURA 6 grant. MUW is going to receive over PLN 48 thousand to carry out the pilot study. The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the UCC MUW where the pilot study is scheduled for implementation is managed by Prof. Kazimierz Niemczyk.
