In case of many people with hematological diseases, often their only possible solution is the engraftment of allogeneic cells, i.e., hematopoietic progenitor cells from the donor. The Clinic of Hematology, Transplantology and Internal Medicine at the University Clinical Centre of the Medical University of Warsaw has been performing such procedures for over 20 years. This allowed to cure hundreds of ill patients. That would have not been possible if it was not for the donors. That is why Prof. Grzegorz Basak, the manager of the aforementioned clinic is certain that it is worth to become a donor, or rather a superhero who saves human life. This does not carry any potential health risk.
- Soon, we are opening a new, super modern branch office with 20 beds, where we are going to continue the mission of treating our patients – says Prof. Grzegorz Basiak. The Professor also underlines that innovative treatment methods utilizing genetically modified cells, stem cells from donors, or lymphocytes, i.e., immune system cells, is going to be soon available at the clinic. The clinic is now starting to carry out procedures using genetically modified lymphocytes, CAR-T lymphocytes. This method is going to be used in particular in the treatment of lymphomas and acute lymphoid leukemia B cell.
