Nose and sinuses, salivary gland diseases, hearing disorders, airway obstruction, head and neck cancers are just some of the issues that ENT deals with. - Many people associate ENT with a very outpatient, that is, non-surgical specialty - our expert said to the youngsters. - Laryngology, on the other hand, is also head and neck surgery, complex surgery of a vast area - from the brain to the clavicles.
The specialized part of the lecture was devoted by Wojciech Kukwa, MD, PhD, to, as he put it, "just a small part of ENT." He spoke about facial nerve palsy, on which facial expressions of the entire face depend, and its reconstruction, made possible by taking a sensory nerve from the leg. He showed what nocturnal apnea looks like and talked about endoscopy in drug-induced sleep - a method that allows doctors to see what is happening in a patient's body during sleep. He also focused on head and neck cancer patients. He stressed that thanks to advances in medicine and innovative surgical methods, such patients are not only being saved, but also have a good quality of life after treatment.
During the meeting, the speaker was eager to share his own reflections and experience on medical studies and professional work. - It is important to remember that after passing the high school certificate, you face six years of study and five-six years of specialization. Medicine is a hard study, a mass of sacrifices, but if someone likes it, it is really a super job. And what is the most important thing in this profession? According to Wojciech Kukwa,MD, PhD, it's communication competence. - You need to be able to talk to people. And more than that, you need to be able to talk about diseases that can lead to disability and death - he said. It is also important to be able to deal with one's own emotions and those of others. And when asked why he likes his job, the specialist responded by joking: - Because I don't have to wear a suit. And then he added that, above all, for what he does every day and that ENT is an extremely interesting and versatile field.
