The ranking was compiled by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In preparing the ranking, its authors took into account, among other things: the number of graduates or employees who have received a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of authors of the most frequently cited papers among the staff, the number of articles in the scientific journals Nature and Science, and publications ranked in selected citation indexes (Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index).
The Shanghai List has been published since 2003, and being on it is a great prestige for a university.
