On the development of the medical profession. Discussion with representatives of the Ministry of Health

At the initiative of the Ministry of Health, nursing students at our university had the opportunity to talk with Piotr Bromber, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, and Edyta Gadomska, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Personnel Development at the Ministry of Health. The topic of the discussion was the competence of nursing staff in light of new legal and organizational regulations.

This is the first in a series of meetings with medical and health science experts, policy makers and health care leaders in Poland, aimed at students of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Medical University of Warsaw. It was held on April 18 at the Ciołka Campus and brought together a hundred nursing students, both undergraduate and graduate. It was organized by the Department of Basic Nursing MUW. - The intention of this meeting is to talk frankly about problems and concerns so that we can shape an appropriate legal order in Poland - said Prof. Mariusz Gujski, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Changes to strengthen competencies

The Deputy Minister began the meeting by presenting the health ministry's efforts to strengthen the competence and skills of those studying for medical degrees, as well as those in the nursing profession. He also discussed the components affecting the raising of the attractiveness of the profession, including salaries and improving working conditions. Piotr Bromber: - In the entire approach to training the health professions, we are trying to balance knowledge with competence and skills. As the Deputy Minister emphasized, the acquisition of new competencies and skills, such as prescribing, ordaining drugs or performing immunizations, is a response to the dynamic professional environment, patients' expectations and coping with the responsibilities that fall on medical professionals.

Discussion

Students asked many questions. Among them about changes in postgraduate education and specializations. The Deputy Minister spoke about the CMKP law being processed, which includes provisions linking postgraduate training centers for nurses and midwives with training centers for doctors. - In my opinion, opening up is better than hermeticity, locating in a limited space - the Deputy Minister said, and stressed the importance of opening up the medical professions to each other, opportunities for joint scientific projects and interdisciplinary teamwork. What about specializations? An evaluation of existing specializations is currently taking place, and then the community will receive unified rules in this regard, also regarding the time of their implementation. There was also talk about cooperation between the older generation and the younger generation, and the Deputy Minister asked students about their professional plans for the future. Participants stressed that they are thinking primarily of working in hospitals, while the most attractive to them are treatment wards, such as surgery.

- I hope you already feel the satisfaction of having chosen this direction and not another. The things you have been willing to share today are very important. I wish you the best of luck - the Deputy Minister concluded.

Edyta Krzych-Fałta, MD, PhD, head of the Department of Basic Nursing MUW: - Meetings of this type are important because they give students the opportunity to discuss with those who hold decision-making positions in the creation of regulations and laws on the medical profession. The voice of our students is especially important, because as an academic community we build the quality and prestige of the profession in and outside the walls of the university.

The event was hosted by Gilbert Kolbe - a nursing graduate  of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
