Prof. Hector Maldonado from the University of Peru was a guest at the Medical University of Warsaw

Prof. Hector Hugo Maldonado Felix is the Coordinator of Agreements of the National University of San Marcos in Lima (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos). This is one of the oldest and most important universities in Latin America, with which we signed in September 2022 a continuation of the Bilateral Agreement concluded in 2018. On Wednesday, June 28, Prof. Hector Maldonado visited the premises of our university at the invitation of Prof. Paweł Włodarski, Vice Rector for International Relations, Development and Promotion.

The scope of cooperation

The main element of cooperation with the National University of San Marcos in Lima is the exchange of students, PhD students and academic teachers. The two universities will also cooperate scientifically. Medicine is well developed in Peru in, for example, the treatment of tropical diseases and altitude sickness. Cooperation with Peru gives our doctors a chance to deepen their knowledge in these areas, and researchers a chance to conduct joint scientific projects.

The first four students from the Faculty of Medicine of our university were doing practical training in Lima in September 2019. The next four ones were supposed to have practical training in 2020, however, due to the pandemic, these trainings were cancelled. In the winter semester of the 2023/2024 academic year, we plan to restart students’ and PhD students’ mobility exchange with the National University of San Marcos in Lima.

Prof. Maldonado's visit

During this visit, in addition to issues of academic exchange and scientific cooperation, the quality of education was also discussed. Assoc. Prof. Piotr Dziechciarz, the Rector's Plenipotentiary for Educational Quality, participated in these talks.

Prof. Hector Maldonado gave a lecture on women in medical science, during which he discussed the process of professionalization of women in the fields of pharmacy and health sciences between 1920 and 1950 in the context of the modernization process that took place in Peru and the South American Pacific Coast.
After the lecture, Prof. Maldonado visited the university's library and the Museum of the History of Medicine MUW, where he viewed the museum's collections and learned the mysteries of the human body in the 21st Century Anatomical Theater.
