Symposium on rare diseases in newborns

Children's Clinical Hospital UCC MUW is one of the few centers in Poland where women give birth to children with severe defects, and where young patients can be operated on right away. The symposium "Rare diseases and congenital defects of newborns requiring urgent intervention after birth. Current diagnostic and therapeutic options" took place at the Children's Clinical Hospital.

On April 14, the conference room at the Children's Clinical Hospital was filled to capacity. The symposium was opened by Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of MUW.

The most important topics

During the first session, experts spoke about modern methods of diagnosing fetal and neonatal defects - including genetic diagnosis, invasive testing for prenatally detected heart defects, and MR imaging of the fetus. The next session was devoted to defects of the newborn for urgent cardiovascular intervention after birth. Here, for example, we talked about cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders in the fetus and newborn, cardiac surgical treatment of heart defects in the neonatal period, as well as new treatment options for acute heart failure in newborns. The last session focused on other rare diseases and defects requiring urgent surgery or interventional radiology procedures. You could listen to presentations on diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal fusion, or the use of interventional radiology techniques in the treatment of vascular malformations.
