The event took place on September 23 in Warsaw. 94 relay teams marched down the park’s alleys of the King John III Palace Museum in Wilanów.
What is the idea behind the event
In fact, it was not a run, but Nordic walking. Each participant had to walk their section of the route with poles. The team with the best time was the winner of the run. But it wasn't about first place, but about promoting health, raising awareness of transplantation procedures and building positive attitudes toward organ donation.
Prof. Grzegorz Basak, Head of the Chair and Department of Hematology, Transplantation and Internal Medicine UCC MUW: - In Poland, not only vascular organs - heart, lungs, kidneys, liver or pancreas - are transplanted, but also hematopoietic cells. We perform about 2,000 such transplants annually. Poland has more than 2 million registered active bone marrow donors. This is a huge population, but we still need new registrations. For example, age and various diseases exclude donation.
The doctor adds that, unfortunately, there are more and more situations where a registered person refuses when a potential recipient is found. Therefore, decisions to re-register must be well thought out, and should not be made under the influence of emotions. If someone has registered, but has changed his mind, he should inform about it right away.
