We remember our history

Medical education in Warsaw has been ongoing for 216 years! To commemorate the day it began—November 15, 1809—the authorities and employees of our university lay flowers at the stone obelisk located on the Banacha Campus. Beneath the obelisk, a message was embedded with a solemn declaration about educating and teaching academic youth, as well as providing assistance to all the sick and needy, along with the motto of service "To People and the Homeland."

The beginnings of medical education in Warsaw

In 1809, doctors: August Wolff, Jacek Dziarkowski, Józef Czekierski, Franciszek Brandt, and pharmacy assessor Józef Celiński established the Academic-Medical Faculty (Medical Academy). Stanisław Staszic was appointed as the president of the faculty, and Jacek Dziarkowski as the dean. In its first year of existence, the Medical Academy had 44 medical students and 14 pharmacy students, and the first diplomas were awarded to 18 graduates in 1813.

WUM continues the tradition

Our ongoing mission is to provide the highest level of education to students of medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences. We operate based on fundamental academic values: mutual respect, freedom of thought and belief, and integrity.
