What does a new student at WUM have to know?

As of Monday, newly enrolled students began their studies at the faculties of their choice. But before they attended their first lecture or seminar, they took part in getting-to-know-you days organized by faculty-specific student self-governments. An Orientation Week was also held for foreigners starting their studies at the English Division and the English Dentistry Division. The entire process was supervised by the Students’ Government at WUM Medical University of Warsaw.

Most of them got to the faculty of their dreams, yet it was not so easy for them to become students right away. Particularly whereas the university is quite a large organization that needs to be learned. Induction days give them a lot of necessary information about the University structure and proceeding. They are also dedicated to integration and finding new friends, to make the beginnings less frightening. It is also an opportunity to learn about the older peers’ perspectives.
– During the induction period, we want to spread our passion among first year students for their future profession. And to convince them they did the right thing by choosing this particular path in life – says Dominika Domanowska, chairperson of the students’ government at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

The new students are given an opportunity to listen to some advice about the practical dimension of education from deans, vice-deans, and deans’ office workers.
– You will see that the way we teach here at the university is different from what you know from high school – said prof. Mariusz Gujski, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, at a meeting for new students of Nursing, Midwifery, Emergency Medicine, Dietetics, and Public Health, which took place on September 29. – The sooner you learn about this shift and about the higher expectations that we have in many areas, the better for you. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your success. And remember that we can help you, but only if we can treat you as partners. Therefore, the Dean encouraged students to avoid falling behind with their studying and to report any issues to the teachers, who are open to hearing about the students’ needs.

During the orientation period, students complete training courses in the field of student rights and obligations. They meet representatives of selected student organizations and study groups, and get to know their dean groups.

Orientation Week

Adaptation and integration meetings are particularly important for foreign students who will not only get to know the school but also deal with all the necessary matters related to their stay abroad. During the Orientation Week, from September 25 to September 30, new students of the English Division and the English Dentistry Division received all necessary information about matters such as their rights as the inhabitants of Warsaw. Tips were also presented about studying at WUM and integration activities.

The event was organized by members of the English Division Student Government. The official welcoming ceremony for first year students, which took place on September 28, was attended by: prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of WUM; prof. Marek Kuch, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Training at WUM; representatives of the Faculties: Jacek Sieńko, PhD hab., Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the English Division of the Faculty of Medicine; Ewa Czochrowska, PhD hab., Vice-Dean for Foreign Relations, the English and Dentistry Division, General and Clinical Speech and Language Therapy. The Rector and Vice-Rector congratulated the students for successful admission to WUM Warsaw Medical University and encouraged them to use the help offered by the school and by senior students. Another important part of the Orientation Week was the White coat ceremony, a symbolic gesture of attachment to the medical profession and joining the academic circles.
