Challenges for emergency medicine

Current and future challenges were debated by the participants of the conference organized on November 16 and 17 in Czeladź. The event was co-organized by the Department of Emergency Medical Sciences MUW, headed by Professor Robert Galązkowski.

About Conference

The conference had an international character, as it included the 9th Polish-Ukrainian Scientific Conference.

The symposium was attended by, among others, Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of the MUW, Prof. Sergii Dubrov, Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine, Iryna Mykychak, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, and Yuriy Kuchyn, Rector of the O. Bogomolets National Medical University.

The organizer of the conference entitled "The Challenge for Emergency Medicine in Poland, Europe and Around the World" was hosted by the University of Silesia. In addition to MUW, it was co-organized by the Department of Emergency Medical Sciences at the Medical University of Bialystok and the O. Bogomolets National Medical University.

The conference consisted of four thematic sessions and three workshops. Speakers from Poland presented current research results related to emergency medical care, while speakers from Ukraine spoke about medical operations in war-stricken Ukraine. This is an important topic for MUW, as our university, together with the Medical Air Rescue, has been actively involved in helping Ukraine since the beginning of the war, primarily conducting training in emergency medicine and battlefield medicine for the country's doctors, medics and nurses. To date, our specialists have managed to train almost 1,000 people.

Support for Ukraine

Prof. Sergii Dubrov, Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine during the conference thanked for the support Ukraine has received from friends and partners abroad.

In turn, Rector Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong emphasized: - During my first visit to Ukraine, I said to our friends: don't thank us, because this is our joint work. We must work together. I hope that this tragic time will end quickly. But I also declare that as a university we will continue our cooperation with our Ukrainian friends. And this conference will show what joint initiatives we can develop.

Prof. Robert Gałązkowski also spoke about the situation in Ukraine: - It cannot be described without emotions. Ukraine today is not only fighting for its independence, identity, statehood, it is also defending Europe - Professor Gałązkowski noted, and pointed out that the role of Poland and Polish doctors, paramedics, nurses is to get involved in helping.

Speeches by speakers from MUW

Patryk Rzońca, PhD hab., from the Department of Human Anatomy spoke about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the missions of medical air rescue teams; Ewa Rzońca, PhD hab., from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Didactics spoke about the pregnant woman in modern emergency medical care; Dr. Marcin Podgórski from the Department of Emergency Medical Sciences talked about severe craniocerebral trauma and the role of prehospital medicine in preventing secondary brain injury; and Jakub Zachaj from the same department talked about the management of the injured on the battlefield, as well as presented lessons learned from the Ukrainian theater of warfare. Prof. Gałązkowski gave an opening lecture entitled "Organization of evacuation of casualties from the battlefield by air."
