The paper summarizes the state of knowledge on the negative effects of tobacco smoke exposure on the functioning of immune cells in the lungs. The authors of the paper focused on detailing the molecular mechanisms of unfavorable changes in the local immune response leading to increased inflammation, inducing tissue damage, promoting infection, and possibly promoting the development of allergic reactions. The paper was published in 2018 in the journal "International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health” (15(5): 1-35).
During a meeting of the Senate of MUW, the authors received the statuette and diplomas from the hands of the Rector - Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong.
The "Golden Cuckoo" (Złota Kukułka) award is given to the author of an experimental or clinical paper published within the last five calendar years and accepted with particular interest by the international scientific community, i.e., most frequently cited in the world literature from among all the papers written at that time by the employees of our University and submitted for the competition. The minimum number of citations of a paper over a five-year period to be eligible for the award is fifty. The number of citations does not include self-citations. The prototype of the statue was made by the sculptor Jarosław Madej. Due to the type of bronze used, the statuette has a golden appearance, which is reflected in the name – the "Golden Cuckoo" (Złota Kukułka).
