“To persevere in the pursuit of knowledge and the development of our personalities, and by all our conduct to uphold the dignity and honor of the students of the Medical University of Warsaw” - newly admitted students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine took their oaths today. They were officially welcomed, in the presence of the university authorities, by the Dean of the Faculty - Prof. Dorota Olczak-Kowalczyk and the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education - Prof. Marek Kuch.
- Today is your special day. You have become members of the WMU’s community forever. You are the best of the best. Out of 12,260 senior high school graduates who applied for the student’s book of our university, 2,821 people have been admitted. I congratulate you very much on this success, said the Rector of the WMU, Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, during the ceremonial Inauguration of the Academic Year 2021/2022, which took place in the Prof. Janusz Piekarczyk Lecture Hall at the Teaching Center.
- The value of any university is the fact that it is founded on knowledge. You will create this knowledge and you will have to use it, said Prof. Bolesław Samoliński, the Chairman of the Council of the Discipline of health sciences, to new doctors and habilitated doctors who, on October 2, received diplomas confirming their first or subsequent scientific degrees in the discipline of health science.
The first in Poland and worldwide unique combined liver and pancreas transplantation in young female patient with cystic fibrosis was performed in the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw. To date, only few transplantation centres, in United Kingdom, United States and Spain, reported performing combined liver and pancreas transplantation in patients with cystic fibrosis. This surgery in 21-year old patient, who developed liver and pancreatic failure in the course of cystic fibrosis is a great success of Polish specialists working in the Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital.

During the inauguration held on 29 September, the importance of developing Polish science of the unit launched more than 20 years ago was recalled. Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of the MUW, emphasised that the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine, established on 27 October 1997, has been active in the most dynamically developing field of medicine from the very beginning. The establishment of the postgraduate school provided young researchers with a guarantee of optimal conditions for scientific development and the opportunity to cooperate with national and international centres in the implementation of innovative research projects. The Rector emphasised that since the establishment, the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine has educated 173 graduates, passionate people, who have become the scientific elite of our country.
In the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation of the Medical University of Warsaw, a 78-year-old patient had a total knee replacement with the NAVIO surgical system, the only orthopedic robot in Poland.
- Recent years have seen what has long been known - that there are serious epidemiological threats and challenges to the public health. These problems need to be solved - said Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, the Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw at the conference entitled "Epidemic threats and public health - yesterday, today, tomorrow." The theme of the meeting, organized by the Department of Social Medicine and Public Health MUW, was dominated by the issues related to SARS-CoV-2.
What is each organ responsible for in the human body? What did autopsies used to look like? These are some of the questions which could have been answered by visiting a stand prepared by the Museum of the History of Medicine of the Medical University of Warsaw during a scientific festival which took place last weekend in the palace and park complex in Jabłonna.
- We count on your work and on the fact that you will remain connected to the university not only by memory and reminiscence, but also during further professional life - with these words Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, the Rector of the MUW, addressed the graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who on 23 September officially completed their education in the fields of: nursing and midwifery (second cycle degree), medical emergency (first cycle degree) and public health and dietetics (first and second cycle degree). Traditionally, the ceremony began with the entry of the ceremonial procession accompanied by the Gaude Mater Polonia hymn.
